Sustainfulness turns sustainability into a habit you collect, one card, one small action, one element at a time.

The inspiration comes from Chinese philosophy's fivefold conceptual scheme, metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, representing the dynamic states of the universe's ongoing existence and development. I was also drawn to meditation practice and western tarot reading: both ask you to look inward and reconnect with yourself. I wanted an app that brings that same quality of attention to sustainability, challenging each person with one achievable task a day until it adds up to a more mindful, sustainable lifestyle.

The other half of the inspiration is nostalgia: the childhood ritual of collecting, trading, and sharing cards with friends, back when a shared deck was the social network. Each element unlocks its own set of challenges, water cards nudge toward water efficiency and conservation, wood cards toward recycling and nature preservation, fire cards toward energy saving and solar power earth cards toward soil conservation and composting, and metal cards toward green investment and transportation efficiency.

01 The Deck

Five elements, 50 cards

All 50 illustrations are hand-painted in watercolor with Procreate. In an age of one-second AI renders, painting each card by hand is a deliberate choice: partly to keep the skill sharp, partly to remember why I got into design. Browse the full collection below by element.

02 The Experience

A daily mindfulness ritual

When user opens the app, the openning sets a quiet, meditative tone and allow user to use a net catcher to get their card of the day. From there, a daily energy card, a growing collection, and a map of unlocked elements turn a sustainability habit into something worth opening the app for.
